This introductory course, accredited by Dr. Dilis Clare, in Herbal Medicine is aimed at those interested in using or understanding herbal medicines for:
- Themselves and their families.
- Providing advice regarding the use of herbal medicines in the course of their employment e.g. sales assistants in health stores, pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, doctors and nurses.
- An understanding of the uses and limitations of herbal medicines that are being used by their patients e.g. pharmacists and pharmacy assistants, nurses and doctors.
- Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners who wish to extend their knowledge of herbal medicines to benefit their patients.
The course is designed to be flexible and modular. Because it is web based it is accessible to those with web access who have basic computer skills.
All modules are mandatory.
As an on-line course the pace of learning is directed by the student.
The Aims of the course are;
- To understand the overall functioning of the body as an integrated whole.
- To understand the roles of nourishment and support for healing offered by herbal medicines.
- To understand the actions of individual herbs.
- To understand the benefits of blending the actions of single herbs in the formulation of herbal blends.
- To understand the safety issues in using herbs. This is in the context of current dominance of pharmaceutical medicine.
- To know how to make herb teas, decoctions and tinctures.
- To know how to responsibly forage and resource herbs.
- To learn how to use forty-five herbs for health benefits.
- To understand when herbal medicines are not appropriate.
- To consider an overview of herbal research.
The overall aim of the course is that the student builds confidence in using herbs and understanding the safe application of knowledge and insights gained by participating in this course. The safe use and understanding of the role of herbs will be to the benefit of their own health and the health of their families, customers, clients and patients where relevant.
Course Structure.
The course will comprise of lectures. Each lecture is followed by a test. Passing the tests are mandatory to the successful completion of course and receipt of a certificate from Dr. Clare. Reading lists, glossaries and other resources are provided to facilitate learning.
Entry Requirements;
General entry, no previous knowledge of herbs or sciences are required.
Ability to use a computer to access on-line material and the management of web based interface will be required.
Course accreditation:
The course is accredited by Dr Dilis Clare as Director of Dr Clare’s Academy of Herbal Medicine.

Course Syllabus;
The course comprises 20 lectures and 20 tests.
Course Layout and Structure
There are total of 6 Units and 20 lessons. Each lesson is followed by a quiz, plus recommended reading material, links and online resources. The minimum time for completion is 3 weeks but students can take up to 6 months to complete.

Materia medica for all herbs.
Glossary of terms relevant to herbal medicine.
Video material where relevant: produced specifically for the course or identified resources for content relevant to subject matter.
Bibliography.
Assessment of learning outcomes.
The tests assess understanding of concepts and assurance that safety issues are assimilated, including the scope and expectations of using herbal remedies.
Short answer questions to ascertain the understanding of key points in the learning programme.
Classification of award.
A Certificate of Completion of the Introduction to Herbal Medicine will be awarded by Dr Dilis Clare from Dr Clare’s Academy of Herbal Medicine.

Dr Clare undertakes professional responsibility in maintaining the highest standards in the operation of this course.

The course will be provided using a Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment implementing the following technological resources.

All students must confirm that they have the technology base to be assured of their capacity to engage in an on-line learning platform.
A FAQ resource will answer questions that commonly arise and limited technology advice will be available via web support services. This will cover occasional problem solving where unexpected problems arise that are not covered in FAQ’s.
Generic technological problems will be resolved by the Academy technology support team.
Basic IT teaching will not be provided.
Electronic Databases.
Students will be directed to reliable sources of background data on the internet, e.g. Google Scholar for original research and Subscription Databases for reliable well resourced and referenced information.
